The speaker saysthat he is aware that he is eventually going to encounter his destinyin a place high above the ground.
The speakerasserts that he is not hateful of the people that he is fighting withbut he is not filled with love for the people heis protecting. Hiscountrymen is Kiltartan Cross and his countrymen are the poor peopleof this country. He says that any outcome of the war will not makehis people any happier or sadder than when the war begun. He declaresthat he decided to fight out of sheer delight and not because of anylaw or any duty or the public men or the cheering crowds. He saysthat he has contemplated over the issue and found that the years hehas lived before were a waste and that the years he was to live afterwill also be a waste and so he does not mind dying.
The rhyme formatof the four lines is ABAB.
The Irishman’sattitude towards the war is a negative one because he knows that heis going to die. As seen in the poem he says that he will meet hisfate. Fate here may be taken to mean death. The last line also showsus that he expects to die in the war.
Yeats was describing the First World War in this poem. The words thatdirectly describe war are: guard- people usually go to war to protecttheir country, Fight- people will go to war to fight the enemy, andtumult- wars are usually filled with confusing noises made by manypeople.
The key character in the conversation is I. this is because usuallyin most writings the first person is almost always the maincharacter.
The setting of the conversation is a tenement house but morespecifically in the caretaker’s house. This is because Frank saysthat he was just notifying the tenants that rent would be free thatcoming week.
The relationship between the I and Frank from this except is that ofemployer and employee. Frank seems to be the caretaker of thetenement house. She is her employer because the owner i.e. Maxim isher husband. We can also see that Maxim is the owner because frank isfollowing his decisions.
The cottage from the excerpt seems to have been where Rebecca lived. This is so because I asked if those were all of Rebecca’s thingsdown there. Ben’s relation to Rebecca is that he used to do oddjobs for her.
I think that the author wrote the excerpt as his own story that isfirst person in order to make the main character known.
The story would continue with I asking frank what he meant that sheis not entirely in tune with Manderley. This would then follow withFrank explaining that he was not asking the question in an offensiveway. Frank would then show her what she came to be shown and that ishow things are run in the tenement and main house.
Rebecca- a fearless lady who loved riding on her boat.
Maxim- a man whois having a hard time dealing with Rebecca’s death (his sister).
I – a newlymarried, nice, caring lady who is a bit insecure about peoplecomparing her with Rebecca.
