The Toulmin Proposal
The issue of nuclear power has been a controversial topic with asmany people opposing it as there are people supporting it. Nuclearpower has numerous advantages, as well as disadvantages (Ferguson73). This makes the topic of nuclear power an effective choice of atopic for this Toulmin essay. It is evident that the topic has claimsfor it, as well as claims against it.
Whereas nuclear power has been accused of radioactive gases, it isevident that it has numerous advantages and it is a clean andreliable source of power that does not emit carbon dioxide into theatmosphere.
Nuclear power has been a topic that has attracted numerous opinions.There are various advantages associated with nuclear power and theseform the claim for the support of nuclear power. Research hasindicated that nuclear power occupies an extremely small space asopposed to other sources of power (Hore-Lacy 102). In other words,the geographical area required to produce nuclear power. Equally,research has indicated that nuclear power is one of the best sourcesof power due to its clean nature. It is evident that nuclear powerdoes not produce carbon dioxide which pollutes the environment. Thisis opposed to the other sources of power such as fuel and charcoalthat pollute the environment (Portney 3). This ensures that nuclearpower does not pollute the environment hence does not lead to globalwarming. It is also abundantly clear that nuclear power does notproduce any smoke particles that may pollute the environment (Hilland Polasky 209).
Another claim that is in support of nuclear power is that it aconcentrated form of power. In other words, the amount of energyproduced from a small mass of fuel is enormous. This reduces thetransportation cost for the materials significantly. Additionally,nuclear power is one of the most reliable forms of power in the worldtoday. Unlike other sources of power such as hydro electricity andwind which depend of weather, nuclear power does not depend onweather. This makes its extremely reliable (Hore-Lacy 74). Whereasthe waste from nuclear power may be radioactive, it is evident thatthe waste little and might not have a huge impact on the environment.
There are, however, some opposing views to the use of nuclear power.For instance, critics argue that nuclear power is extremely expensiveto implement and maintain. Additionally, the critics state that thecontrol and disposal of nuclear waste that contains radioactivegasses might be extremely expensive (Farrell 12). It is also assertedthat in case of nuclear accidents, the radioactive gasses might havedetrimental effects. The radiation from the accident can affect thebody cells hence leading to illnesses that might run for generations(Portney 2). There are a number of nuclear accidents such as theChernobyl nuclear accident which was disastrous. Lastly, nuclearpower usage in the military has proved to be disastrous. The use ofthe nuclear bombs in Japan during the World War II led to numerousdeaths and its effects are felt to date.
It is evident that whereas there are a number of shortcomingsassociated with nuclear power, the advantages are numerous andbeneficial to mankind. The reliability and cleanliness of nuclearpower are sufficient reasons for adopting nuclear power. Nuclearpower has little waste and nuclear power plants take up small spacesas compared to other sources of power such as wind power (Hore-Lacy85). Lastly, its lack of reliability on the weather makes it anextremely reliable source of power. The choice is this topic wasinformed by the effect that nuclear power is going to have in theworld. It is clear that if the entire world adopted nuclear power,issue of energy shortage would have been resolved.
