Nursinginformatics have been described by American Nurses Association (ANA)as“the specialty that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science in identifying, collecting, processing, andmanaging data and information to support nursing practice, administration, education, research and the expansion of nursingknowledge”(Ball, 2000).focus on information structure andalgorithms used by nursing professional in their practice. Additionally, informatics nurses pays attention to the informationmanagement process as well as the technology necessary to implementthe processes effectively. However, nursing is dynamic with the roleof nursing professional becoming intensified and diversified, andthus the informatics require to re-invent, in order to address thedynamic needs of the healthcare environment.
Question1 Influence of informatics in nursing
Informaticsplays a significant role of standardization of documents throughcommunicating and coordinating care with other nursing disciplines. The other influence of nursing informatics is information managementdone by coordinating a discharge plan, educate and teach transitionsof healthcare. Nursing informants manage all nursing informationconnected to the practice and the process of delivery of patientcare. Furthermore, nursing informants enhance care continuity andhelp to improve the relationship between the healthcare providers andthe recipients. Ultimately, they facilitate cost savings and goals ofproductivity through high quality services and evidence based care(NI2006 Post Congress Conference, & Murray, 2007).
Question2 changesinformatics effects in health care
Nursinginformatics are predicted to bring change in their practice wherebyfuture healthcare will be personalized. Telemedicine will be used asthe new way to provide care as diagnostics and treatment of patientsis done using micro-arrays. On the other hand, the role of nursing inthese changes will be to customize medications according to theindividual genome. The other change predicted will be theavailability of on-demand healthcare. As a result, a different modelof providing healthcare could be implemented based on ATM concept. The role of the nurse in these changes will be to adjust toincorporate the computer system in their day-to-day practice anddeliver care using the most current devices (Ball, 2000).
Question3 rolein the informatics career
Rolesthat I intend to play in the career concerning informatics includecoming up with ways of improving information management as well ascommunication, in order to improve efficiency and enhance the qualityof care given to the patients. What is needed is proper andsimplified documentation using computer technology. The other rolewill be to develop systems that are efficient and user-friendly. Toachieve information optimization the nursing professionals today getinvolved in the design, implementation and analysis of systems. Toreach that goal what is needed is to improve my knowledge of existinginformation systems to enhance flow of work in the nursing process.Furthermore, it is crucial to collaborate with other healthcareprofessional in order to redesign, develop and acceleratetransformation of healthcare (Ball, 2000).
Inconclusion, there has been an increased need of information andknowledge in the nursing practice. However, technology advances haverevolutionalised the delivery of healthcare. Therefore, there is agreat opportunity to transform the healthcare system. As mentionedin this paper nursing informant will develop changes in future makingthe role of nursing intensified and diversified. For this reason, itis vital that the informatics require to re-invent, in order toaddress the dynamic needs of the healthcare environment.
