Todayit is known as “operationsand supply chain”,however, over the past five decades the department has undergonenumerous evolution taking different other titles to its currenttitle. The department has become an integral part in organizations asit helps in the transformation of both manufacturing and serviceindustry, I terms of operations and delivery of services to thecustomers. The numerous changes in the title has been, a denotationof its historical changes, but the department has continually focusedon the operational functions. However, there has been an evolution ofthe department’s implementation policies as well as to what themission entails (Chopra,2004).PurposestatementThis paper is a summary of the OperationManagement Department,its evolution, current challenges, as well as anticipating itsexciting future and its opportunity-rich.

Afterthe industrial revolution, managers were faced with coordinationproblems, and this led to the publication of the problems managersfaced in managing/measuring production. The history of thedepartment, has been categorized into three key phases, which arecrafted manufacturing, mass production and the modern period.Operations management has been concerned with designing, overseeing,as well as controlling the production process, and redesigningbusiness operations in the productions of both goods and services.With reference to the article, operation management is concerned withthe whole system which provides goods or delivers services (Chopra,2004).

The1970’s and 80’s challenges and their response. This period wasmarked with the introduction and use of computers in the department.This affected the transfer of operations research tools, a businesspractice that instigated key variations in the sector of operationmanagement. The operation research experienced two types ofchallenges. These included the computation and data storage, whichremained a practical handle towards the implementation of thedepartment demands. Secondly, the model failed to keep pace with therapid evolution of business challenges and practices.

Differentpeople contributed to the ever changed operation management scope.These included Fredrick Taylor, who initiated the principles ofscientific management concept, which deployed the time-study andwork-study tools. Others include frank, and Lillian Gilbreth, whointroduced the industrial psychology, other concepts in the earlystages of the department included, moving assembly size, and economiclot size. Other concepts that have come along include qualitycontrol and Hawthorne studies of worker motivation in 1930’s,Multidisciplinaryapproaches to complex system problems, which came along in 1940’s,the evolution continued to come along till today, when we have theissues of E-commerce. Within the operations management department,there are the defining aspects. These include details such as thesupply chains, which referred to as the aspect of delivering goods toa consumer. There is also the marketing interface, finance,organizations, service operations, operations strategy, as well asdesign and improvements (Chopra,2004).

Inconclusion, despite the enormous evolution within the operationsmanagement department, the key functions of the departments has beenmaintained. From the article, it’s clear that, the historicalmilestone in operations management entails the famous industrialrevolution, post civic war period, scientific management, operationsresearch, the service revolution, and the current revolution which isknown as computer revolution. The numerous revolution has been thedefining aspects of the OperationsManagement Disciplinewhich is ever undergoing changes to reduce the challenges within thedepartment.
