Causes of a failed course


Numerous students in colleges and universities fail in theircourses. Whereas many students fail due to lack of concentration inclass and failure to study or revise, there are other factors thatmay lead failures in a course by students in colleges anduniversities. Failure in a course has tremendous effects on the selfesteem of such students and even has dire lifetime effects on astudent. Research has indicated that over 300,000 students fail theircourses in America annually. It is evident that most of the causes ofstudent failure in course are within the control of the students(Kokemuller, 2013). However, there are some that are outside thecontrol of the students. The type of grading that a professor usescan also affect the performance of a student in a course. Forinstance, some professors may focus on homework while others mayfocus on class tests as the mode of grading student performance.

Health problems amongst the students are one of the primary causesof failure in courses. Sick students are forced to skip classes toattend hospitals and seek medications. Such students aredisadvantaged since they do not capture what the instructor teachesin class. Students suffering from chronic illnesses such as cancerand HIV and Aids may end up missing numerous class hours while inhospital. This poor class attendance has been one of the key causesof failure in courses. Students who miss classes are unable toparticipate in class discussions or do pop tests in class(Kokemuller, 2013). Additionally, students who miss classes whenattending to medical issue may miss out on home assignments, papersand projects. All these contribute to poor performance in courses.

There are also some health issues that may render some studentsincapable of sitting for tests. For instance, students who are frailand weak may not be in a position to sit for examinations. Forinstance, students suffering from malaria may become extremely weakduring test time and may fail to sit for their examinations. Thisleads to automatic failure in the course. Stereotyping anddiscrimination of students with chronic diseases such as HIV and Aidsmay lead to depression and stress (Kokemuller, 2013). This may leadto poor performance in examinations. Additionally, such stereotypingand discrimination may also affect the participation of such studentsin group discussions and group projects and o r assignments.

Time management is one of the skills that every student must possessif he or she desires to pass a course. Numerous students fail intheir courses because they lack proper time management. There arenumerous students who engage most of their time in playing computergames and watching television. Additionally, there are students whospend majority of their time hanging out with friends. Such studentslack sufficient time to concentrate on their studies hence leading tofailures in courses. Such students may even skip classes and miss outon vital class or group discussions hence perform poorly in theircourses (Kokemuller, 2013). It is also essential to state that thereare students who are employees and only come to class on part timebasis. Such students may also miss out on critical class discussionsor assignments hence fail in their courses.

The rate at which students in America are failing in their coursesis a clear indication that there are factors that affect theirperformance. Two primary factors have been highlighted in the abovediscussion. Lack of sufficient time to participate in classactivities, as well as health issues affect the performance ofstudents in class. Students need to be healthy and have sufficienttime if they have to pass in their examinations.
